Featured in BBC Radio 6 Music’s Albums of the Year 2024 and Bandcamp Daily’s Best Albums of 2024, Violence Gratuite — aka Violaine Morgan Le Fur — is a multidisciplinary artist whose work drifts freely between film, performance, curation and music.

Her debut album Baleine à Boss navigates an unusual musical terrain: echoes of French underground pop, Caribbean rhythmic ghosts, fractured club music and the faint influence of artists like Tricky or Lizzy Mercier Descloux.

Trained in art history and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and later at Villa Arson and La Cambre, she first emerged through film and visual work. Her autobiographical documentary À l’Ouest traced a journey to western Cameroon in search of her father’s grave, exploring ancestral memory and ritual dialogue with the past. Since then, she has continued to operate across mediums — directing films and music videos, developing exhibitions, and curating artistic programs through the Yoké collective, while contributing to performance and dance programming within the Nyege Nyege ecosystem.

As Violence Gratuite, this multidisciplinary background becomes audible. Her music feels less like traditional songwriting and more like a series of sonic tableaux: playful yet unsettling, intimate yet theatrical.
