Jay Mitta stands among the original architects of the singeli movement. Emerging from Dar es Salaam roughly a decade ago, he was part of the core circle — alongside figures such as Sisso, Bamba Pana, Duke and later DJ Travella — who collectively reimagined the genre’s direction through the Singeli Movement, a loose constellation of studios, producers, MCs and dancers that reshaped singeli into the global phenomenon it is today.

Each member brought a distinct sensibility to the blueprint, and Jay Mitta often occupied one of the movement’s most exploratory edges. This position has also made him a prolific collaborator, working with contemporary luminaries such as Errorsmith, Modern Institute and Reda Senhaji, as well as delivering remixes for Caterina Barbieri, Mdou Moctar and many others.

In May 2026, Jay will finally release a selection drawn from more than 200 unreleased tracks, curated by Nyege Nyege Tapes to mark his long-awaited return to the global touring circuit.

Where Travella often brings a more melodic, “acid unicorn” euphoria to the dancefloor, Jay leans in the opposite direction — darker, more abrasive, a no-holds-barred rhythmic onslaught that pushes singeli back toward the feverish intensity of its street origins. In doing so, he reminds audiences that, much like techno, singeli comes in many shapes and forms.

On stage, Mitta performs either solo (also extended sets) or alongside his longtime collaborator Anti Vairas, one of the most electrifying MCs in the singeli universe. After a four-year hiatus devoted to motherhood, Anti Vairas recently returned to the stage with undiminished intensity, combining voice and dance into a unique whirlwind. Her voice and stage presence slicing through the rhythmic turbulence, directing the room with a rare crowd-rallying energy that recently left Berlin’s CTM audiences in sweat and in shock. The duo’s live show remains one of the most uncompromising propositions in contemporary club music: tempos pushed to the brink, drums piling upon drums, the atmosphere tipping from exhilaration into pure dancefloor chaos.
